Description

"Yigal Gawze's photographs capture the abstraction, simplicity and optimism of early modernism in Tel Aviv. He distills the essence of the Bauhaus to bring it to life in a modern city, and focuses on the subtle effects of natural light on architecture, a method that the masters of modernism themselves applauded. Nonie Niesewand, designer & author.

Around 4000 buildings, mainly in Bauhaus style, form the world famous "white city" of Tel Aviv. Yigal Gawze's photographs show the traces left by the encounter of the European Bauhaus with the culture of the Mediterranean. They are a homage to the Bauhaus spirit, the avant-garde photographers of the 1920s and to the current relevance of architectural modernism in urban planning. The fascinating portrait of the shining city reveals the poetic essence of Bauhaus architecture with surprising detail shots, even in the fragment.

(one of the) 10 must-read books about the Bauhaus.

Dezeen
Tel Aviv's 1930s Bauhaus treasures like you haven't seen them before.

Haaretz
Gawze's vivid portrait of the UNESCO World Heritage Site reflects the simple elegance of Bauhaus architecture with impressive colour photographs. Inspiring detail shots of facades, windows and cornices can certainly compete with already well-known black and white photo volumes of the avant-garde of the 1920s.

North German Radio
This is the most beautiful moment captured by Yigal Gawze, the utopia that has become a picture, in which he tries to grasp the Bauhaus ideal.
