Description

Elegant sailing ships, wide seascapes, crystalline architectural views - with his unmistakable pictorial language and motif world, Lyonel Feininger became one of the most important and still extremely popular artists of Classic Modernism.

In Paris Lyonel Feininger (1871-1956) left his successful career as a caricaturist behind and began a life as an independent artist. At first his pictures populated grotesque, wild, travesty-like figures, to which the Parisian street scenes inspired him. A little later he found his way to the typical pictorial themes that made him world-famous. Rarely has Feininger's artistic development from his early works to his late work been shown in the USA with such virtuosity. With unpublished photographs and excerpts from the unpublished diary of his wife Julia, this artist's monograph provides an essential insight into Feininger's life and work and will surprise even connoisseurs of his art.
