Theo van Doesburg created geometrically structured paintings and was thus one of the co-founders of abstract painting and coined the term "concrete art". Together with Piet Mondrian, Georges Vantongerloo, Robert van 't Hoff, J. J. P. Oud, Jan Wils, Bart van der Leck and others, he founded the artists' movement De Stijl in 1917 and became its "ambassador". De Stijl's concepts had an impact not only in visual art and architecture, but also in the design of furniture and other objects of daily use. From 1921 to 1923, van Doesburg taught at the Weimar Bauhaus.

Although De Stijl was made up of many members, Van Doesburg was the "ambassador" of the movement, promoting it across Europe. He moved to Weimar in 1922, deciding to make an impression on the Bauhaus principal, Walter Gropius, to spread the influence of the movement.
