Christopher Farr Bauhaus carpet / Bauhaus Rug by Gunta Stölzl

On the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the Bauhaus in 2019, the English manufactory Christopher Farr is reissuing several hand tufted textile designs by Bauhaus master and textile designer Gunta Stölzl as hand tufted carpets. The motif of the Bauhaus carpet 1 is from the 1920s, the edition is carried out in close collaboration with her two daughters Yael Aloni and Monika Stadler.

Gunta Stölzl brought modern art into handloom art and later became the first master at the Bauhaus. As early as 1919 she began her studies at the Bauhaus in Weimar, partly working closely with Marcel Breuer. Her textiles on the early Marcel Breuer furniture became famous. After completing her apprenticeship in 1922/23, she went briefly to Krefeld and then set up a weaving mill for Johannes Itten in Zurich. In 1925 she returned to the Bauhaus and took over Georg Muche's weaving workshop. In 1931 she left the Bauhaus and emigrated to Switzerland. Today, Gunta Stölzl is regarded as an important innovator of textile design.
