Description

“The intrinsic decorative urge should not be eradicated. It is one of humankind’s deep-rooted, primordial urges. Primitive people decorated their implements and cult objects with a desire to beautify and enhance…. it is a sense emanating from the urge for perfection and creative accomplishment.” Sophie Taeuber-Arp

Bring Bauhaus into your interior design with this custom handmade rug from Sophie Taeuber-Arp’s artwork Rising Falling Flying.

Order this artwork woven for your home as a handtufted or a Tibetan handknotted custom rug in 100 knots.

We will weave almost 500 000 knots by hand to create this rug in the smaller size.

For environmental reasons and to provide our full bespoke service, our rugs are always made to order.

Delivery time for this rug is between 8 and 10 weeks, depending on the desired size and technique.

• Technique: Tibetan handknotted in 100 knots per square inch or Handtufted.

In the Tibetan handknotted technique we follow the centuries-old handcraft tradition. We first set a vertical wooden loom, on which we stretch cotton warp threads from the bottom to the top in a continuous loop. We then make the knots around two warp threads and a metal rod. The knot count (80, 100 or 150 kpsi -knots per square inch-) states how many individual knots are made in one square inch. A higher knot count allows for more detail in the design while also resulting in a finer rug texture and a longer-lasting rug, as the knots are tighter and denser. Tibetan rugs are extremely high-quality and an wonderful example of pure handcraft.

To create this rug using the handtufted technique, we insert tufts or loops of yarn through a fabric backing using a "tufting gun". We then apply a latex layer to hold the tufts in place and sew a resistant cotton backing on. The tufting method requires a high level of expertise and artistry to reproduce intricate patterns. It is ideal for rounded shapes, as it does not need to follow the design row by row and the yarn can be added freely anywhere, thus allowing for soft curves.

• Material: New Zealand wool.

Pure New Zealand wool is a high-quality, resilient material that offers the brightest colour absorption and creates wonderfully soft rugs.

• Size: 150 x 192 cm (4.9 x 6.3 ft), 188 x 240 cm (6.2 x 7.9 ft) or 225 x 288 cm (7.4 x 9.4 ft) or contact us to request your bespoke size.

Please note that the sizes and the colours may vary within a 5% margin, due to the completely handmade process and natural materials.
